TEHRAN (NIPNA) – Hassan Abbaszadeh, Deputy Petroleum Minister and CEO of the National Petrochemical Company (NPC), emphasized the importance of diversifying the energy portfolio to mitigate energy imbalances and channel resources towards higher value-added applications during a specialized workshop on energy optimization in the petrochemical industry.

The session focused on strategies for adopting Substitute Natural Gas (SNG) as an alternative fuel for the petrochemical sector.

Abbaszadeh highlighted the challenges posed by energy imbalances, which have reduced production capacities at some petrochemical plants. “We must leverage energy optimization and diversify our fuel mix to overcome these challenges,” he stressed.

Abbaszadeh identified the significant domestic LPG production capacity as a key enabler for utilizing SNG and called for a detailed technical evaluation and the establishment of necessary infrastructure. "Adopting SNG, while adhering to strict standards, can become a practical solution for the industry," he noted.

The CEO also underscored the role of renewable energy in the petrochemical sector’s strategic roadmap. "The industry has made promising strides in renewable energy adoption, and we aim to maintain this momentum," he added.

The workshop included contributions from key stakeholders:

  • Seyed Morteza Ashrafi-Shahri, NPC’s Director of Energy Optimization,
  • Representatives from utility providers Fajr, Mobin, and Damavand,
  • Experts from Bandar Imam Petrochemical Complex, and
  • Renowned national specialists in the field of SNG.

The collaborative discussions sought actionable solutions to enhance energy efficiency, reduce imbalances, and ensure a steady and sustainable supply of feedstock to the petrochemical sector. The initiative reflects NPC's commitment to innovation and energy resilience in Iran's strategic petrochemical industry.
