TEHRAN (NIPNA) – Kangan Petro-Refinery Company is planning to establish a green ammonia production unit with an annual capacity of 500,000 tons, utilizing hydrogen produced by its olefin and PDH units.

According to the company, the main feedstocks for this initiative are 88,500 tons of hydrogen and 420,000 tons of nitrogen annually. The hydrogen will be derived as a by-product from its olefin units, while nitrogen will be sourced from the company's ASU (Air Separation Unit). The hydrogen feedstock, extracted from the olefin by-products containing valuable components such as carbon monoxide, methane, acetylene, ethylene, and ethane, will be purified and combined with nitrogen to produce ammonia.

This project is environmentally significant as it involves recycling hydrogen currently used as fuel in the olefin unit and converting it into high-value ammonia. The resulting ammonia will primarily be used in producing chemical fertilizers, addressing both environmental and economic priorities.

The initiative underscores Kangan Petro-Refinery's commitment to sustainability and value creation by leveraging advanced recovery and conversion technologies.
